News

As of the 21st April 2026 both our breeds have been reclassified as ‘Priority’ on the RBST Watchlist.

Soay – A sustained decline in registrations saw the Soay move from ‘At Risk’ to the ‘Priority’ category.

Boreray – The breed’s conservation status has improved significantly over the past 25 years; however the last five years have seen a steady decline in breeder numbers and registrations. The Boreray moved from ‘At Risk’ to the ‘Priority’ category.

The only way to help our breeds is to buy registered sheep and birth notify / register their progeny.

2025 Soay and Boreray Sheep Society Survey

On behalf of the committee a short survey has been created to help us, as a Breed Society, get a better understanding of what can be done for our members.  This is a chance for you to put across ideas and opinions completely anonymously.  The results will be discussed.
Click on ‘Survey’ below and it will take you to the form.

07/09/25 – The Traditional and Native Breeds Show and Sale is being held on Friday and Saturday (12th and 13th September 2025).  This is our official breed society sale – there is a show on the Friday and sale on the Saturday.

RBST Combined Flock Book
Survey 2025
We do hope that you are coping with the drought, keeping well and had a successful lambing season.
Its time once again for the annual Combined Flock Book survey. The survey tells us which sheep are still alive, and which flocks are still active. It would help us a great deal if you would log into the Online Registry and complete your survey NOW.
The final results of the survey are published in the Flock Book. This will be Volume 52.
There is no need to delay. By doing your survey return via the Grassroots Online Registry now, you will save the RBST the printing and postage costs associated with sending you a paper copy. Any births, deaths or transfers you log after you complete the survey will automatically be added to your confirmed survey return.
To complete the survey ‘Online’ please go to the web site www.rbst.org.uk/combined-flock-book
click on the link to your breed
Type in your Combined Flock Book number (the leading zeros are important) This may not be the same as your RBST membership number
Type in your password / access code
If you have mislaid your password – click on the lost password button on the log in page, a reset will be emailed to the address we have on file for you. If you have problems please email registry@grassroots.co.uk and we will send you a link to reset your password
Click on Do Now in the Survey Panel in the middle of the Home Page.
Transfers – You may wish to log transfers of breeding sheep before clicking on the link to the survey page. Transfers are free of charge. Click on the menu icon top right and select Transfer.
Births – births need to be logged before the end of October, but any you do log later in the summer will automatically be added to your confirmed survey list. All lambs should be logged in the year they are born. Log into the Online Registry and click on the menu icon top right to select births. Add the offspring from each ewe and add to list. Finally view and submit the list. Notification of births is FREE OF CHARGE. Online registry fees are at reduced rates.
Survey – On the survey page you will be given a list of all the animals we think you own.
Tick for each to tell us if they are alive, dead or sold
Remember lambs logged later, or previously notified lambs registered later will be automatically added to your confirmed return once you have done the initial submission, as will deaths and sales. Completing the survey NOW will save the printing and postage involved in sending you a paper form
We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your continued support,
Libby Henson and the team at
